Instead of Clinking….
Here are some ideas to create a fun atmosphere during dinner:
Moo Moo- I love you! These guys chose to have people make animal sounds in the mic to get the Bride and Groom to kiss.
- Battle Of The Soxes
Think Newlywed Game on Steroids-This takes about 3 minutes, and can be done directly after The anniversary countdown dance with several couples. A crowd favorite!
- Variation 1- Ask the guests to pass the napkins several times, i.e right, then left, then across the table. Each time you stop, have the person do something cute, fun, or slightly embarrasing. The person who has the napkin at the end gets to keep the centerpiece.
- Dollar Bill Variation- Use a dollar bill instead of napkin, having a guest donate the dollar. At the end of passing around the bill, give the person who donated the dollar the centerpiece, or let them choose between getting the dollar back or keeping the centerpiece.
- Lotto Ticket/ or Wrapped Gift- Use a lotto ticket, or a wrapped gift to pass and whoever ends up with it can choose either the centerpiece or the ticket/gift.
- Task assignments – When the DJ stops the music for the first time that person has to do a task, for example get drinks for the table, and the next time it stops, maybe that person is the designated user of the disposable camera (if you have them) or whatever. You can come up with your own tasks, I’m sure. Anyway, the last person gets to keep the centerpiece.
- Al’s favorite- Tell the guests that there is a fabulous prize for 1 winner at each table- whoever has the birthday closest to today. Make that person stand, and announce that their fabulous prize is that they get to lead their table in the chicken dance- Big roar of laughter! Then, the DJ says “No, we’re changing the rules and now it’s a skill competition, and have them pass the napkin around the table to music. At the end of the passing, the DJ can award the centerpiece instead, (the chicken dance never has to be played in order for this to be effective) or if you really wanna be out there- do the chicken dance right then and there, between courses of your dinner. The shock factor is awesome and it’s the best icebreaker I know of. At the end of the chicken dance, you can reward your Chicken Dance leaders with the centerpiece.
Centerpiece Give Aways….
Don’t know what to do with that centerpiece that you paid SO MUCH for? Why not get creative with the giveaway? It’ll make for a better vibe in the room and more fun during dinner, which leads to a more fun reception…… Here are some ideas-
Suprise Under The Plate
Have your caterer hide a penny, or a dollar or a lotto ticket, or a cute picture, or a sticker or whatever! under 1 plate at every table. Have your DJ ask your guests to lift their plate and announce that whoever has the suprise under the plate gets to take home the centerpiece.
Pros- It’s easy and fast.
Cons- It’s not majorly fun or suspenseful. You also need to make sure the suprises actually get put under one plate at each table.
Pass The Object with Variations.
Have your DJ ask each table to pass a napkin (spoon, dollar bill, or other object) hot potato style around the table to funny music. When the music stops, whoever has the object gets to take home the centerpiece.
Pros- Passing the object is fun and exciting. When skillfully done, it can transform a ho-hum dinner to a fun party in less than 5 minutes. A great icebreaker that works especially well on conservative guests.
Cons- If not skillfully done it comes off as lame and cheesy. This idea has been around for a while, so maybe you can come up with your own unique variation.
Bride and Groom Trivia.
Come up with a list of trivia questions with multiple choice answers about you and your fiance. Hold a competition for the centerpieces by going from table to table and asking those questions. The first person to answer a question correctly at each table gets to take home a centerpiece
Pros The right questions and answers can be really funny. This is very unique and personal and its a fun way of hitting all the tables during/ after dinner.
Cons It takes some time, and if you don’t start hitting your tables early enough, it can delay the start dancing, which is usually really bad.
The Left /Right/Across Story.
Have your DJ instruct guests to pass the napkin to the right when he says the word RIGHT and to the left when he says the word LEFT and across the table when he says ACROSS as he reads a story. You can write your own story or use this one-
(Bride) LEFT her house and was on her way to the church for the ceremony. But about half way there, as she turned LEFT at the light, she remembered that she LEFT her wedding dress at home RIGHT ACROSS from the refridgerater! She knew RIGHT away that she had to turn around and go RIGHT back to get her dress, all the way ACROSS town where she LEFT it. So she turned RIGHT, then LEFT and LEFT again, turning RIGHT into her driveway. Sure enough, there it was, RIGHT where she had LEFT it, ACROSS from the Fridge.
Now, she was on the RIGHT track. When she arrived at the church, she saw the clock ACROSS the room and realized that she only had an hour LEFT before the wedding and she still had her hair and make-up LEFT to do. So she went RIGHT to work and finished with time LEFT to spare.
Well the wedding was beautiful-the ceremony was just RIGHT and nothing was LEFT out. At the reception, (Groom) surprised (Bride) with a beautiful gift. She was so happy that she teared RIGHT up!
On their honeymoon they sailed ACROSS the ocean! Of course, it wouldn’t be RIGHT to say they didn’t make many friends on the ship, because they hardly ever LEFT their room.
So, now there’s nothing LEFT to say except enjoy the evening/afternoon. Just for fun though, pass once more to the left. Now see, that was fun! Right?
Pros This is unique, fun, and interactive
Cons Its a little more complicated and your DJ has to be literate. (Not a problem with us, lol)
